FLOC Students Learn about Literacy at Annual Book Festival

Wednesday, November 16, 2011

FLOC students are now on their way to creating their very own libraries with the books they hand-picked at our 5th Annual Book Festival this past Saturday, November 12th.

The Book Festival included a special guest speaker, fun literacy activities, and a book distribution through which our students selected their own, new books to take home. As keynote speaker and guest reader for the festival, Leon Harris of ABC7/WJLA-TV spoke about the importance of reading in journalism and engaged our students in one of our favorite books, The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs.

The students were enthusiastic to ask questions and learn about reading from the eyes of an award-winning journalist. Afterward, they had the chance to participate in literacy activities which included conducting interviews in a mock newsroom and creating their own comic strips. Most importantly, they selected and took home their very own books.

Thank you to everyone who helped make this event a success. Our students and staff are greatly appreciative of our community of supporters that made this event possible. For more images from the event, visit our Facebook page.
