FLOC Announces Capacity-Building Efforts

Friday, April 29, 2011

Students should not have to wait to pursue the opportunities they deserve. At For Love of Children this year, 500 students were given the chance to reach their full potential with tutoring and other educational services.

But even more students can benefit from FLOC’s programs with the help of additional tutors and general operational support.

More than 170 supporters heard exciting news about new capacity-building efforts at FLOC’s annual fundraising event, themed “Beyond the Classroom: Redefining How Today’s Kids Become Tomorrow’s Leaders,” at the Academy for Educational Development April 27.

It was announced that FLOC is doubling the size of its summer tutoring program this year by admitting 50 additional students who will receive critical math and reading instruction. The programs start the week of June 20 and run until the week of August 1.

“With your help, we can build the capacity to ensure  that every student who comes to FLOC has a volunteer ready, has a spot in our program, and has the opportunity to succeed,”  said FLOC Executive Director Tim Payne.   “Every volunteer tutor literally means one more child who is served.  Every contribution of time and money means more opportunities for children and youth in our communities.”

FLOC’s programs will receive further support with a grant of $50,000 this year from the Willkie Farr & Gallagher LLP Greater DC Community Foundation.  FLOC’s multi-year partnership with the law firm began in October of 2010.

Martin J. Weinstein, Willkie Farr & Gallagher partner, gave remarks at the luncheon detailing how the two organizations can continue to work together and said, “We discovered you all through a rigorous process, and I’m so glad we did. You’re an amazing organization.”

Will you join our efforts as we empower students to make the choice to be amazing and transform their futures?

Please help us ensure that no child has to wait for FLOC's important educational services. FLOC students truly get the support they need at every step of their academic journeys through elementary school, middle school, high school and post-secondary education.
